This hand colored engraving of the Americas was produced by the Homann Heirs publishing house of Nuremberg in 1746, with the engraving attributed to Johann Matthaus Haas. The Homann Heirs firm was founded as the successor to the celebrated cartographer Johann Baptist Homann and remained one of the most prolific cartographic publishers in 18th-century Europe, producing maps widely distributed across the continent. Presented in original hand color, the map documents European geographic understanding of the American continent at mid-century, with particular detail in its depiction of California, the American Southwest, and the Caribbean.
