This Australian Aboriginal churinga is a long board of wood with rounded ends, incised down its face with a column of six concentric roundels, each ringed by a burst of short radiating rays. Zigzag and chevron banding fills the ground between the roundels, and fine parallel tooling runs across the surface throughout. The wood is rubbed with red ochre and worn to a warm reddish brown, with a shallow split running down part of the face.
Churinga are sacred objects of the Aboriginal peoples of central Australia, incised with designs tied to ancestral beings and to particular places. The roundels and the lines linking them carry meanings understood within the group that made and kept them, and the boards were held in restricted care rather than shown openly. It stands 18.25 inches high and is mounted upright on a fitted metal stand.
