This Australian Aboriginal churinga is a long tapering board of wood, drawn to a narrow point at the top and a rounded point at the base. Its face is incised with dense herringbone banding, short parallel strokes running out at an angle from a central spine down most of the length. The plain untouched tips contrast with the worked middle, and the wood carries a warm reddish brown patina with old chipping along one edge.
Churinga are sacred objects of the Aboriginal peoples of central Australia, incised with designs tied to ancestral beings and to particular places. Banded and chevron cutting of this kind marks the surface in registers rather than the roundels seen on other boards. It stands 18.5 inches high and is mounted upright on a fitted metal stand.
