This Australian Aboriginal churinga is a long slender board of wood tapering to points at both ends, its face incised overall with a continuous maze of squared meandering lines. The grooves turn back on themselves in interlocking rectangular keys that run the full length of the board, with no roundels or circles anywhere on the surface. The ground between the meanders is worked with fine diagonal tooling, and the wood carries a warm brown patina with a faint reddish cast.
Churinga are sacred objects of the Aboriginal peoples of central Australia, incised with designs tied to ancestral beings and to particular places. The meandering lines on boards of this kind trace ancestral journeys across country, read by those entitled to know them. It stands 18.5 inches high and is mounted upright on a fitted metal stand.
