Provenance: Andrey Tischenko, Finland

This Australian Aboriginal churinga is a broad board of wood with rounded ends, incised down its length with a chain of concentric lozenges linked one to the next. Each lozenge is bordered by a beaded row of small punched dots, with the ground between them filled by close parallel grooving that runs across the face. The surface is rubbed with red ochre and shows age wear, including a dark stain along the right edge and losses to the outer edges.

Churinga are sacred objects of the Aboriginal peoples of central Australia, incised with designs tied to ancestral beings and to particular places. Linked lozenges and dotted borders of this kind belong to the same design language as the roundel boards, worked here in angular rather than circular form. It stands 19.5 inches high and is mounted upright on a fitted metal stand.
