This Australian Aboriginal churinga is a narrow board of wood tapering to a point at the top and a rounded end at the base, incised with three concentric roundels spaced down its face. Paired vertical grooves run between the roundels and link one to the next, the cut lines standing slightly proud of the surrounding ground. The wood is rubbed with red ochre to a warm reddish brown and worn smooth across the raised areas.
Churinga are sacred objects of the Aboriginal peoples of central Australia, incised with designs tied to ancestral beings and to particular places. Roundels joined by connecting lines are read as sites linked by ancestral travel across country. It stands 14.5 inches high and is mounted upright on a fitted metal stand.
