A large non returning boomerang of shallow curve, carved from a single length of dense hardwood and worked to a flattened lenticular section. Both faces are finished by adzing, and the tool facets remain legible beneath a deep glossy patina that runs from dark red brown to near black. One face carries a continuous incised design of fine parallel grooves worked along the full length of the blade.
The grooves are cut in tight multiple bands that swell and taper into elongated leaf shaped enclosures, a fluted linear convention of southeastern Australia. Boomerangs of this weight and length were made for fighting and hunting rather than for return flight, and pairs were also struck together as percussion in ceremony. Wear is consistent with a well used patina.
