Aboriginal Longka Longka Pearl Shell with Cord

$4,400.00

Aboriginal Australian

Australia

1930s

Pearl shell with ochre pigment and fiber cord

Height 8 1/4 inches, Width 5 1/2 inches

Provenance: Jonathan Saussehrd, Australia

The pendant is cut from a large pearl shell in a teardrop shape, with the iridescent nacre surface visible throughout. An incised zigzag pattern covers most of the surface, rubbed with red ochre pigment to create contrast against the pale shell. Two small drilled holes are set near the lower edge of the shell.

A long, twisted fiber cord is attached at the top of the shell, extending well below the pendant itself. The cord appears to be original to the piece and remains intact. The shell is mounted on a wood block stand with a metal rod for display.
