Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico

Circa 1920

Pottery, mineral pigments

Height 8 1/4 in. (21 cm); diameter 10 1/4 in. (26 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Tucson, Arizona

Acoma Pueblo potters have produced painted pottery continuously for centuries, and the early 20th century represents a period when traditional forms and painted vocabulary remained closely tied to the long pre-contact and historic tradition. The parrot is among the most characteristic subjects in Acoma decoration, appearing in the polychrome painted pottery of the region from the historic period onward and carrying associations with the south, with rain, and with the broader Pueblo world. This jar is painted with parrot figures and geometric banding in the mineral pigments characteristic of Acoma production.

The vessel form is a rounded storage jar with a wide diameter relative to its height, a profile consistent with Acoma jars of this period. At 8 1/4 inches tall and 10 1/4 inches in diameter the piece has substantial display presence. The piece comes from a private Tucson collection.
