Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico Circa 1900–1940
Earthenware, mineral and vegetal pigments
Height 9 1/2” (24.1 cm), Diameter 10 1/2” (26.7 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Taos, New Mexico.
Acoma Pueblo potters of the early twentieth century continued to work within a long-established tradition of hand-coiled earthenware decorated with mineral and vegetal pigments on a white slip ground. The introduction of orange as a third color in the polychrome palette became increasingly common in Acoma work from the late nineteenth century onward, adding visual complexity to the geometric and floral vocabulary. Vessels of this quality were made both for household use and for an expanding collector market that recognized the sophistication of Pueblo ceramic arts.
This olla is notable for its thin walls and deep concave base, hallmarks of accomplished Acoma construction that require considerable skill to achieve at this scale. The exterior is decorated with a large central floral medallion, flanked by stylized bird figures and interlocking geometric elements in black, white, and orange across the full body of the vessel. The painted surface is well preserved with strong pigment and clean line work throughout.
