The comb rises to a broad domed crest above eleven long tapered tines, each cut round in section and worn to a fine point, and a small standing figure surmounts the crest with the head and shoulders modeled and the body left as a short shaft. The crest is incised on the front with paired looping motifs to either side of a central line and on the reverse with a herringbone of short strokes running out from the spine, the cutting shallow and unfilled. The crest and the figure are a dark near black brown from handling while the tines have worn back to a pale honey tone, and the shoulder where the tines meet the crest is polished smooth on both faces.
Vincent Price, 1911 to 1993, was an American actor who trained in art history at Yale and the Courtauld Institute and was a serious collector and dealer throughout his life. He founded the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College in 1957 with a gift from his own collection, served on the board of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and assembled holdings of African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American material alongside European and American art.
