The comb has a rectangular crest above four heavy squared tines, considerably wider apart and thicker in section than on the usual duafe, and from the crest rises a long ringed neck carrying a head worked in the round. The face is cut with heavy lidded eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth beneath a low fringe of hair, and the crest is incised on both faces with a broad X inside a border of fine hatching that follows the outer edge. The wood is a deep even reddish brown throughout with a hard glossy surface, and the tines are worn evenly at the tips.
Vincent Price, 1911 to 1993, was an American actor who trained in art history at Yale and the Courtauld Institute and was a serious collector and dealer throughout his life. He founded the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College in 1957 with a gift from his own collection, served on the board of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and assembled holdings of African, Pre-Columbian, and Native American material alongside European and American art.
