Made in Japan, 1960
Glazed ceramic
Height 5 1/2 inches (14 cm)
Provenance: Private collection, Texas
The mug is modeled as a moai head with a squared cap set across the crown, a long straight nose in high relief, and deep set brows above a wide shallow mouth, the ears rendered as long vertical slabs standing clear at each side. The glaze is a streaked chestnut brown, brushed so the strokes read vertically down the face and pool darker in the recesses of the brow and the mouth, with the interior finished in plain cream. The original paper label survives on the base, and the surface is unchipped with the glaze intact across the high points of the nose and cap.
