The drawstring sample bag is stamped Alma Assay Office, J. E. Dollison, E. M., Alma, Colo. in black across the face, the canvas toned with rust and ore staining and the twisted cord drawstring intact. Bags of this kind carried ore samples to the assayer for valuation during the mining boom that ran at Alma from the 1870s to the end of the nineteenth century. Alma, at 10,578 feet in the South Park mining district, is commonly cited as the highest incorporated town in North America, founded in 1873.
