Keawe wood

Height: 11¾ in. (29.8 cm)

Provenance: Maile Meyers, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi

This contemporary ʻamakua figure is carved from keawe wood by Hawaiian artist Kanaʻe Keawe, depicting a standing human form with a rounded head retaining pegged hair sockets at the crown. The figure is rendered with a simplified, volumetric body in which the arms merge with the torso and the form tapers toward the base, consistent with the stylistic approach Keawe brings to his figurative work. The keawe wood has been worked to a smooth surface with a deep reddish brown patina brought out through the carving process.
