Height: 12½ in (31.8 cm), tallest figure
Provenance: Private Collection, Los Angeles, California
This group of five jazz musicians — pianist, bassist, drummer, saxophonist, and trumpeter — is modeled in painted composition with original paint intact, depicting a full working band in performance poses with individually rendered instruments and orange and brown costuming consistent with American vernacular figure-making of the 1940s. Folk and popular art ensembles of this type were produced for the domestic market during the swing and bebop era and survive in varying degrees of completeness, with fully intact groups retaining all original figures and paint among the more collectible examples of the form.
