Bronze
2nd millennium BC
Height 2 1/4"; Width 1 1/2"
Provenance: Martha Pillard, Honolulu, HI
This small Amlash bronze bull figure from northwestern Iran was likely produced as a votive or ritual object. The compact, stylized form and rich verdigris patina are consistent with ancient bronze animal figures from the region. Amlash bronzes, named for the area in Gilan province where many such works have been recovered, represent a significant tradition of small-scale cast metalwork produced during the second millennium BC.
