Ancestral Pueblo Lightning Bolt Bowl

$600.00

Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Southwest  1150–1250 CE

Earthenware, mineral pigment

Height 5” (12.7 cm), Diameter 8” (20.3 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Wally Zollman, Indianapolis. Old labels on base. Not found on Federal or State land.

Bowls decorated with bold black-on-white geometric interiors are among the most recognizable forms of Ancestral Pueblo ceramic production, manufactured across the Colorado Plateau during the Pueblo II and Pueblo III periods. The lightning bolt or zigzag motif seen here is a recurring element in this tradition, rendered with hatched and solid fills across the interior surface. Dr. Wally Zollman of Indianapolis assembled one of the most significant private collections of Ancestral Pueblo material in the United States, with objects documented as not originating from Federal or State land.

This bowl is intact with the exception of a minor rim chip, and retains old collection labels on the base consistent with prior study or cataloguing. The interior is decorated with a continuous lightning bolt design in black mineral pigment on a white slip ground, with hatched infill and clean line work. The exterior is undecorated with a natural buff clay surface.
