Ruiner at Klipponigar I Mesa Verde's Canons by Gustav Nordenskiöld, published in Stockholm in 1893, is the foundational monograph on the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde and the Ancestral Pueblo people who built and inhabited them for nearly six centuries. This first edition is complete with all 17 original plates, including the celebrated double-page photogravure of the Cliff Palace, along with 159 smaller illustrations, maps, and plans. The text is in Swedish; the volume was subsequently issued in an English-language edition as The Cliff Dwellers of the Mesa Verde.
Nordenskiöld conducted his fieldwork at Mesa Verde in 1891 at the age of 23, working with the Wetherill family who had first documented the major cliff dwellings in 1888. His systematic excavation and documentation established the scholarly framework for all subsequent study of the site. The copy is bound in the original maroon publisher's cloth with decorative blind stamping to the front board and gilt title to the spine.
