Silver tetradrachm set in sterling silver mount
Diameter approx. 30 mm; mount hallmarked STG.SI, maker's mark JB
Provenance: Private collection, Auckland, New Zealand
This ancient silver tetradrachm was struck at Thasos in Thrace during the late Hellenistic period, between 148 and 90 BC, following the Roman reorganization of Macedonian coinage. The obverse bears the head of Dionysos facing right, crowned with an ivy wreath, a type introduced by Thasos and issued in large quantities through the late second and early first centuries BC; the reverse depicts Herakles standing facing, head turned left, holding a club and bow, with the Greek legend ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΘΑΣΙΩΝ, meaning "of Herakles the Savior of the Thasians." The coin has been set in a modern sterling silver mount secured by eight bezel prongs with a fixed suspension loop, the mount hallmarked STG.SI with maker's mark JB, consistent with British or Commonwealth silversmithing practice, and the coin surface shows patination, wear, and tonal variation consistent with ancient silver of this period and circulation history.
