Alpaca with cochineal dyes
Linen mount 13 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches, Bag 11 x 18 inches
Provenance: Fred Boschan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The textile is woven in alpaca fiber with a deep red ground achieved through cochineal dye. Vertical bands of white diamond lattice patterning run along both outer edges, framing a wider central panel. The central panel displays repeating rows of stylized feline figures woven in cream against the red ground, stacked one above another and separated by narrow striped borders.
A row of striped horizontal banding runs along the lower edge of the panel, above a fringe of long twisted tassels in matching red tones. Several tassels are finished with small woven diamond shaped tabs at the top. Testing by Dr. David Wenger confirmed the absence of synthetic dyes in the piece, consistent with the stated pre industrial date.
