American, issued by the Hall–Tyner Campaign Committee
United States
1976
Offset lithograph on paper
23.5 x 16.5 inches (60 x 42 cm)
Private collection, Brooklyn, New York
The poster sets a photographic portrait of Angela Davis against a facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, with Declare your Independence running across it in red script and Angela Davis urges lettered at the upper left. A column of text at the left carries her statement as a voter, urging use of full electoral rights and presenting the program of the candidates named in the text, Gus Hall and Jarvis Tyner. The sheet is clean with strong contrast, presented framed.
The poster was issued for the 1976 presidential campaign of the Communist Party USA, which ran Gus Hall for President and Jarvis Tyner for Vice President, with Davis campaigning in support. It belongs to the bicentennial election season, its design turning the Declaration of Independence and the July 4, 1776 dateline to the campaign's voter registration message. Campaign paper from minor party tickets of this period survives in smaller numbers than major party material.
