Apache Beaded Hide Moccasins, Geometric Seed Beads
Apache, southwestern Plains
1890
Brain-tanned hide, glass seed beads, sinew
Length 8 1/2" (21.6 cm)
Provenance: Yoshi Miyake, New York
Apache moccasin making of the late 19th century continued a tradition of brain-tanned hide construction sewn with sinew, the footwear both practical in the southwestern landscape and expressive of the maker's skill in beadwork design. Seed bead decoration in geometric patterning replaced the earlier pony bead work by the 1880s, allowing finer and more detailed designs within the established conventions of Apache decorative traditions. Moccasins of this period represent the mature expression of Apache beadwork before early 20th century production began to incorporate outside influences.
This pair is decorated with seed bead geometric patterning in white, red, and green across the vamp, the design executed in tight rows consistent with Apache beadwork conventions of the 1890s. The hide has worn to a pale tone through age and use, the construction sinew-sewn throughout. Provenance traces to Yoshi Miyake of New York.
