Apache
Arizona
19th century
3" x 14"
Provenance: Diane Luther, NM
This large, flat Apache coiled tray dates to the 19th century and is distinguished by an allover scattered dark patterning in which small devil's claw elements are distributed evenly across the natural willow ground from center to rim, creating a dense, speckled overall surface rather than a defined geometric figure. The surface has darkened considerably with age, giving the basket a deep, unified tone that sets it apart from the more graphic patterning typical of turn-of-the-century production. The coiling is fine throughout, and the basket has developed the character of long use and handling consistent with a 19th-century piece.
