Apache
Arizona
Circa 1900
3" x 15"
Provenance: Diane Luther, NM
This large, flat Apache coiled tray is dominated by a bold pinwheel design radiating outward from a tight dark center, with broad sweeping arms in natural willow alternating with dark devil's claw that cover nearly the entire surface. The dark ground is unusually dominant here, with the willow elements reading as light figures set against it rather than the reverse, giving the composition a striking visual weight. At 15 inches in diameter the coiling is exceptionally fine and even throughout, with the pattern maintained with precision from the center point to the outer rim.
