Apache Coiled Tray, Radiating Arms, Open Ground

$1,850.00

Apache

Arizona

Circa 1900

3 3/4" x 15 3/4"

Provenance: Diane Luther, NM

This very large, flat Apache coiled tray has a spare, open composition in which thin dark devil's claw lines radiate outward from a dense central point, dividing the natural willow ground into broad open segments that dominate the surface. The restraint of the design gives the basket a strong graphic quality, with the pale willow ground reading clearly against the dark radiating lines that extend to the outer rim. At nearly 16 inches in diameter the coiling is fine and consistent throughout, and the surface has developed a deep, even honey tone characteristic of well-aged Apache work.
