This large Apache coiled olla has a full, rounded body that narrows at the neck before flaring to a wide open rim, following the classic olla form that Apache weavers developed for storage and water carrying. The entire exterior surface is covered in an allover pattern of interlocking geometric figures worked in dark devil's claw against the natural willow ground. The design is maintained with exceptional consistency from the base through the shoulder and up the neck.
At 19 inches in height this is a substantial example of the type, with a scale that gives the interlocking pattern room to develop across the full body. The coiling is fine and even throughout, a mark of skilled construction in a piece of this size. The dark devil's claw elements retain strong color across the entire surface, holding the geometric design in sharp contrast against the willow.
