Gelatin silver print

Height 14 × Width 11" (35.6 × 27.9 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Utah

This large-format gelatin silver print by Walter J. Lubkin depicts an Apache man in close portrait view, holding arrows, with a patterned textile or wall surface behind him giving the portrait a strong visual structure. Lubkin worked as a photographer for the United States Reclamation Service and documented the region near Weaver's Needle and the Salt River watershed beginning in 1908. The image belongs to his early photographic record of Apache people near Government Well, Roosevelt, and related sites along the Apache Trail.

Lubkin's field photography was made with large glass plate equipment under difficult travel conditions, giving these images both technical and documentary interest. The sitter is shown with directness and formal composure, consistent with Lubkin's portrait approach in this period. As an Apache subject from the Salt River and western Superstition Mountain region, the photograph belongs within the Southwest category.
