Arapaho Beaded Buffalo Hide Moccasins, Red Cuff
Arapaho, southern Plains
1890
Buffalo hide, glass beads, red wool, sinew
Length 10 1/2" (26.7 cm)
Provenance: Yoshi Miyake, New York
Arapaho beaded moccasins of the reservation era continued the tradition of dense geometric beadwork across the vamp, the compositions remaining consistent with earlier production while incorporating new color combinations and the occasional addition of trade cloth elements at the cuff. The red wool cuff edging visible on this pair is a feature associated with southern Plains moccasin production of the late 19th century, the trade cloth adding a strong color accent that frames the beaded vamp and ankle. The geometric zigzag and banded designs are characteristic of Arapaho beadwork conventions of the period, the multiple ground colors and polychrome patterning creating a visually complex surface across a relatively compact form.
This pair is fully beaded across the vamp and ankle in polychrome geometric zigzag and banded designs in white, green, red, dark blue, and ochre tones, with red wool cuff edging at the upper and sinew-sewn construction throughout. The beadwork is dense and consistent, and the pair retains its overall construction integrity. Provenance traces to Yoshi Miyake of New York.
