Arapaho Beaded Moccasins Green Vamp Red Fringe
Arapaho
Northern Plains
Circa 1880
Length 10¼"
Provenance: Private Taos collection
The vamp of each moccasin is covered in a large panel of green seed beads, flanked on both sides by white ground beadwork worked with red and blue geometric patterning. A continuous border of blue beads runs along the upper edge where the vamp meets the cuff, and a small red wool fringe tassel is attached at the toe of each moccasin. The hard sole construction is typical of Plains moccasins made for wear on open ground.
Both moccasins are constructed of buffalo hide with sinew stitching, the cuffs left unbeaded and lined with dark cloth at the interior. The beadwork shows honest wear consistent with use, with the pattern remaining clear and the colors strong throughout. Red fringe tassels of this type are a characteristic decorative detail in Arapaho beadwork of the late nineteenth century.
