Arsi Headrest with Curved Struts and Oval Base

$475.00

Arsi, Ethiopia, circa 1920s

Wood

7 1/4 x 8 inches (18.4 x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: Jonathan Lowen Collection, London; Graham Beck Collection, South Africa, acquired from the above in November 2005; thence by descent; Bryan Reeves, London

The headrest is cut from a single piece with a deeply concave platform whose ends rise into upswept points, carried on two outward curving struts that spring from an oval dished base. Between them two short columnar posts stand close together beneath the center of the platform, framing a narrow opening and taking the weight where the load is greatest. The wood has worn to a dark reddish brown with a hard glossy surface across the platform and the base, and a fine split runs down from the platform edge along the line of the grain.

Jonathan Lowen was a London collector of African art whose collection was assembled over several decades and has been exhibited and published, including at the Brunei Gallery at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
