Asmat Figure with Raised Arms and Incised Chest

$500.00

Asmat, West New Guinea, 1960

Hardwood

Height 17 1/2 inches (44.5 cm)

Provenance: English trade; old collection label on the reverse

The figure stands with the knees bent and the legs held wide, both arms raised from the shoulders and folded up at the elbows so the hands close beside the head, and a tall domed cap rises above a face cut with ringed eyes, a long ridged nose, and a small open mouth. Curling incised motifs are worked across the chest and the upper arms, and shallow bosses mark the nipples and the navel. The wood is a dark close grained hardwood with traces of lighter pigment held in the eye rings and the deeper cuts.
