Hardwood

Length: 15½ inches (39.4 cm)

Provenance: Gary Seering, Aiea, Hawaii

Carved crocodile figures were produced by Aboriginal communities of northern Australia, where the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) held significant presence in both the physical environment and ceremonial life. This example is carved in the round with incised scale texture covering the body, the head defined with a pointed snout and the dorsal ridgeline suggested along the back. Such figures functioned variously as objects of ceremonial significance, personal power objects, or items produced for exchange.
