Aztec
Mexico
Circa 1470 to 1521
Bone, identified as raccoon femur
Height 5 inches, Width 5 inches, Depth 2 inches
Provenance: Scott and Stuart Gentling, Dallas, Texas
The fragment is carved from a curved section of bone into the form of a stylized animal head, with a pointed ear or horn like projection, an incised eye, and a defined snout. Along the shaft, a series of carved bands and circular relief motifs decorate the surface in a repeating pattern. The opposite end of the fragment is broken, with an irregular, worn edge indicating the piece was once part of a larger object.
The bone surface is a warm tan brown throughout, with visible natural cracking and grain running along its length. The carving is shallow but consistent, wrapping around the curve of the bone from the animal head toward the broken end. The piece was previously in the collection of Scott and Stuart Gentling of Dallas, Texas.
