Albumen carte de visite
Standard CDV format
Provenance: Jeff Hammond, St. Johns, Arizona
This carte de visite portrait of William F. Cody was made by Jeremiah Gurney & Son of New York, one of the most prominent portrait studios of the nineteenth century, likely dating to around 1873 when Gurney photographed Cody during a period of active association with frontier figures including Wild Bill Hickok. The CDV format was the dominant photographic medium for portrait distribution in the 1860s and 1870s, and Cody was among the most frequently photographed public figures of the era as his fame grew through stage performance and the emerging Buffalo Bill brand. Studio portraits of Cody by identified New York photographers from this period are sought by collectors of Western Americana and celebrity photography.
