Bura Coiled Bronze Bracelet, Niger

$2,300.00

Bura — Niger, Cross River Valley

Circa 3rd–11th century AD

Bronze

Height: 10¼ in (26 cm); Width: 4¼ in (10.8 cm); Depth: 4¼ in (10.8 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, Paris

This coiled bracelet is formed from a continuous flat bronze strip wound into a series of stacked disc-like coils, with incised geometric decoration visible on the upper sections. The Bura culture of the Niger Cross River Valley produced a distinct body of bronze and terracotta objects now recognized as among the earliest known metal artifacts from the western Sahel, with dating placing their production between the third and eleventh centuries AD. Objects of this type are understood as personal ornaments that also carried ritual and funerary significance within Bura material culture.

The heavy green and grey oxidized patina across the entire surface is consistent with extended burial over many centuries. Mounted on a custom metal stand, the coiled form reads as a sculptural object of considerable visual presence while preserving its identity as a personal ornament of great antiquity.
