Byzantine Bronze Encolpion Cross with Orant Figure

$2,600.00

Byzantine

11th century

Copper alloy

Height 4 1/8"

Provenance: Pars Coins, San Jose, CA

This Byzantine reliquary cross, or encolpion, is cast in copper alloy with a haloed figure incised on the face. The figure stands frontally in the orant pose, arms outstretched and hands raised, the robe rendered in fine parallel lines. A suspension loop rises from the top and a hinge at the foot allowed the two halves to open.

Pendant crosses of this kind were worn around the neck throughout the Orthodox world in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine centuries. Each was formed of two hinged halves that opened to hold a relic within. The engraved figure and beaded border are characteristic of the type.
