Caddo Figural Effigy Pipe

$4,800.00

Caddo, North America  Circa 900–1600 CE

Fired red clay

Height 5 1/2” (14 cm), Length 7” (17.8 cm)

Provenance: Collection of Dr. Wally Zollman, Indianapolis. Old labels and notes on underside.

Effigy pipes were among the most culturally significant objects produced by Caddo communities of the Southern Plains and Mississippi Valley, used in ceremonial and social contexts across wide trade networks. This figure, modeled in a crouching or bound posture, has been interpreted in the literature as a possible depiction of a captive or enslaved individual, a subject documented in Caddo iconographic studies. The pose and physiognomic rendering are consistent with a corpus of Caddo figural pipes held in major institutional collections.

The pipe is modeled in fired red clay with a naturalistic treatment of the human form, including articulated limbs and facial features rendered with directness. Old labels and handwritten notes on the underside indicate prior study or collection cataloguing. The surface shows consistent age patina throughout.
