American
1930s
Oil on canvas
Height 24" (61 cm) x Width 27 1/2" (69.9 cm) including frame
Provenance: Seymour Lazar, Palm Springs, CA
Cannery Row in Monterey, California was at its industrial peak during the 1930s, when the sardine canning industry made it one of the busiest working waterfronts on the Pacific Coast. This oil on canvas depicts the harbor with fishing vessels moored at the docks, figures on the wharf, and seabirds in a turbulent sky, rendered in the loose, tonal manner characteristic of California plein-air and harbor painting of the period. The work is unsigned, though its handling and subject place it firmly within the tradition of American scene painting that documented the working waterfront during these years.
The composition is built around the vertical rhythm of masts and rigging set against a cloudy, atmospheric sky, with warm highlights catching the hulls of the boats and the wooden dock structure. The paint is applied with evident confidence, the brushwork direct and unhesitating in a manner that suggests a practiced hand. The work comes from the collection of Seymour Lazar of Palm Springs, a noted collector of American art.
