British, published London
Circa 1800
Hand-colored engraving on paper, linen mat
Image: 6½ × 4½ in. (16.5 × 11.4 cm); matted: 14 × 11 in. (35.6 × 27.9 cm)
Provenance: John Dominis Holt, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
This hand-colored engraving depicts Captain James Cook in an oval bust portrait in naval uniform, with a small narrative vignette below showing a scene from his final voyage to Hawaiʻi. The inscription reads "CAPTAIN COOK" with a London publication line, placing the print within the substantial trade in Cook commemorative imagery that circulated in Britain from the 1780s onward. The oval portrait format with lower vignette was a standard device for biographical prints of this period.
The coloring is applied selectively to Cook's face, blue coat with gold trim, and the figures in the lower scene, while the background paper remains uncolored. The linen mat presentation is consistent with period framing practice for small-format engraved portraits. The John Dominis Holt provenance connects this print to a Honolulu collecting context, reflecting the natural circulation of Cook-related imagery within Hawaiian historical collections.
