Carl Coker is a Las Cruces, New Mexico artist whose large-format acrylic paintings use bold color and fragmented form to transform recognizable subjects into near-abstract compositions. This square canvas depicts cactus forms in close-up, the familiar shapes of pads and spines dissolved into overlapping planes of deep red, coral, teal, and gray that read as pure painterly structure as much as botanical observation.
