Carved wood
Height 14 1/2 in (36.8 cm)
Provenance: Carl Coker, Las Cruces
Carl Coker was a New Mexico artist based in Las Cruces whose carved wood sculpture engaged the modernist tradition of direct carving while remaining rooted in the figural. This female torso, carved in a rich dark hardwood, reduces the female form to its essential volumes with a sensuous confidence that reflects the influence of mid-century modernist sculpture. The smooth, flowing surface treatment and the warmth of the wood grain are fully integrated into the sculptural conception.
Coker's own statement accompanies the work: "I perceive the world in terms of who I am, and what I have met in life and project this onto the world that I perceive. Aware of this and the fact that the nature of things is independent of my senses, I may be able to escape the dumber sorts of illusions. However, I have only my own perceptions of the world thus the world is only a reflection of my own sensibilities." The direct provenance from the artist in Las Cruces makes this a primary example of his work. This is an intimate and accomplished piece of New Mexican modernist wood sculpture.
