Acrylic on Masonite
Height 37" (94 cm) x Width 37" (94 cm) framed
Provenance: Carl Coker, Las Cruces, NM
Carl Coker is a Las Cruces, New Mexico artist whose large-format acrylic paintings engage with bold color, fragmented form, and the sensory experience of everyday subjects rendered at a scale that transforms them into near-abstract compositions. This square-format painting depicts watermelons in extreme close-up, the deep reds and blacks of the cut flesh filling the picture plane against a ground of saturated blue, the seeds and rind reading as rhythmic marks across the surface. The composition operates between representation and abstraction, the familiar subject made unfamiliar through scale and intensity of color.
Coker's handling of acrylic on Masonite in this work is direct and physical, with the paint applied in broad, confident strokes that emphasize the flatness of the support and the optical weight of the saturated palette. The scale of the painting gives it considerable presence on the wall, the subject matter accessible but the formal treatment demanding sustained attention. The work comes directly from the artist.
