This Colima redware dog lies in a recumbent pose with the front legs extended forward, the head raised and turned slightly to one side, and the mouth open with incised teeth showing. Both ears stand upright and the tail curves up at the rear, while the shoulder and haunch are modelled as raised forms beneath the surface, giving the compact body a sense of the skeleton underneath it. The burnished red brown surface is clean and even with minimal fire clouding, a more uniform tone than is usual on pieces of this type.
The recumbent pose, with the body fully horizontal and the head raised, is a recognised variant within the Colima dog tradition and differs from both the seated and the standing types.
