$800.00

Chancay, Peru

1200 to 1400 AD

Cotton, camelid fiber

Headbands 12 1/2 in (31.8 cm) and 18 in (45.7 cm); pouch 21/4 x 4 in (5.7 x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Private collection, MD; Senatus Consulto, Copenhagen, COA no. 5141

The Chancay culture of the central coast of Peru, flourishing from approximately 1000 to 1470 AD, produced a remarkable range of textiles for both daily use and funerary contexts, with headbands and small pouches among the most frequently recovered personal accessories from Chancay burial sites. This group of two headbands and one pouch is woven in the geometric patterns characteristic of Chancay textile production, with the red, orange, and natural fiber tones typical of the culture's palette. The Copenhagen provenance through Senatus Consulto, with certificate of authenticity number 5141, adds a layer of documented European collection history to these pieces.

Chancay textiles are among the best preserved Pre-Columbian textiles in existence, the dry conditions of the Peruvian coastal desert having maintained fiber, color, and structure across six to eight centuries. Headbands and pouches of this type were personal accessories worn and used in life and then interred with their owners, making them intimate objects of daily Chancay culture. This group, with its documented provenance from both an American private collection and a Copenhagen specialist dealer, represents a well-provenanced example of Chancay personal textile arts.
