A temporary measure by the Bank of England to address the silver shortage of the Napoleonic Wars, the oval counter stamp carries the portrait of King George III and was struck onto Spanish host coins, principally four and eight reales, to authorize their circulation in Britain. Eight reales pieces passed at four shillings and ninepence and four reales at half that, and the countermarking programme ran only briefly in 1797 before the Bank moved to overstruck dollars instead.
