Chazal Society Islands Tahiti Stipple Print

$650.00

Tahiti / Society Islands, Polynesia

1830

Stipple engraving printed in color with original hand coloring

19 × 12¼ in. (48.3 × 31.1 cm)

Provenance: Sydney trade

This 1830 stipple engraving was made after Antoine Chazal and engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas of Louis Isidore Duperrey’s voyage of 1822–1825. Duperrey’s expedition aboard La Coquille visited many Pacific islands, with major observations in Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, and the wider Pacific. The image belongs to the early 19th-century French tradition of scientific and voyage publication.

The stipple technique gives the image a soft tonal surface, further enhanced by color printing and original hand coloring. Chazal’s design and Tardieu’s engraving translate the subject into a refined published plate intended for readers of Duperrey’s voyage account. As a historical Pacific print, it records French visual engagement with Tahiti and the Society Islands during a period of expanding European exploration and documentation.
