Chimu
Peru
1200–1400 AD
Blackware ceramic
Height 5 1/2"
Provenance: Carl Coker, Las Cruces, NM
This Chimu blackware vessel has a globular body rising from a low foot ring to a tall, straight cylindrical neck, with four modeled monkey figures applied in relief at the shoulder where the neck meets the body. Each monkey is rendered with a distinct face, open mouth, and arms pressed against the vessel wall, arranged symmetrically around the circumference. The surface is fired to the dark blackware characteristic of Chimu production and has developed an uneven patina with lighter areas of wear consistent with age and burial.
