Mexico, West Mexico (Nayarit)
100 BC–300 AD
Ceramic
Height: 14¼ in (36.2 cm), Width: 12 in (30.5 cm), Depth: 8 in (20.3 cm)
Provenance: Dr. Saddoff, Beverly Hills, California
The Chinesco style is associated with the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico, primarily Nayarit, and represents one of several distinct regional ceramic traditions flourishing in the period before contact. Chinesco figures are distinguished from other West Mexican types by their refined facial treatment, with closed or half-closed eyes, smooth modeled features, and an interior stillness that sets them apart from the more animated Jalisco and Colima traditions. They are understood to have served funerary functions, placed in shaft tombs as companions or representations of the deceased.
This seated figure displays the characteristic Chinesco facial type with a wide flat hat or headdress, hands positioned at the waist, and a torso decorated with incised or applied geometric patterning. The surface retains areas of red and black slip consistent with West Mexican ceramic production of the period. The combination of scale, modeling quality, and condition makes this a representative example of the Chinesco tradition.
