Chinesco
Nayarit, West Mexico
100 BC to 350 AD
Ceramic
Height 11 inches
Provenance: James Jeter, Santa Barbara, California; Constance McCormick Fearing, Santa Barbara, California, acquired in the 1950s
The figure kneels with both hands resting on the abdomen, meeting near a small dark circular mark at the navel. The face is painted with a geometric lattice pattern in dark pigment across both cheeks, framing almond shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a closed mouth. The ears are pierced, and the hair is rendered in dark brown with a center part.
A reddish pigment band outlines a V shaped necklace design around the neck and shoulders, and a painted diamond pattern marks the groin area. The ceramic surface throughout is buff colored, with extensive dark speckled mottling from the firing process. The figure is intact, kneeling with the legs folded beneath the body.
